Kelly Jones learned the principles of indexing while completing her master’s degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Washington’s Information School.
She is a member of the American Society for Indexing (ASI) – Pacific Northwest Chapter, and of the special interest groups for Culinary Indexing and Gardening / Environmental Studies Indexing.
Kelly brings her experience as a former librarian turned children’s book author to her indexing work, using her knowledge of readers of all ages to build ways to find out what’s in a book. Kids are fascinated by nonfiction. They need age-appropriate entries created with them in mind to be successful as they learn how to use an index.
A curious person, Kelly has been cooking, gardening, and making things for decades, and she loves books related to her hobbies. (Ask her about baker’s percentages, growing cyclamen from seed, cold connection methods for jewelry, math for knitters and quilters, sewing espadrilles, or tips for drawing digitally with Procreate!)
Kelly keeps up-to-date with continuing education coursework, discussions with colleagues in the American Society for Indexing and the Indexers Discussion Group, and her own explorations of what indexing can bring to a book. (See also, curiosity.)
Current learning project: a fan index for the Cryptid Club comics collection by Sarah Andersen, with a forthcoming companion article for ASI’s Key Words on why she chose such an unconventional work to index. (Look for it in late 2025.)
